UK University "Golden Triangle" - The Student Room

TIMES HIGHER EDUCATION PUBLISHES 2014 WORLD REPUTATION RANKINGS The University of Cambridge and the University of Oxford have been bumped down a place in the 2014 World Reputation University Rankings. With Harvard and MIT managing to maintain their first and second place, Stanford University knocked Cambridge off the number three spot, pushing Oxford to number five. The US clearly dominates the rankings with seven of the top 10 places being taken by American Institutions. You can see the full table at the Times Higher Education Bahram Bekhradnia, president of the UK’s Higher Education Policy Institute, says: “Given the UK’s size, this survey suggests we are still punching above our weight as far as research performance is concerned: at more than four times our size, the US has only around four times the number of universities in the top 100. Reflections of a first year medical student - The Student Room

1. Medicine is not as hard as everyone makes out, least not the first year. You will be around intelligent people, true, but you will most definitely not be married to your desk and textbooks. On average, I have 2/3 hours of teaching a day, much less than what I had at Sixth Form! No one gives a toss about your A levels, module grades, GCSEs, UKCAT score, even where you got your degree from at the end of the day. When it is 2AM on a dark and cold ward and you are the House Officer on call, the old lady in front of you drowning in her own fluids will not look at you and ask any of those.

Wishful thinking in medical education: The challenge of feedback and the burden of accountability in clinical medical education

On-going feedback is the most useful as it accustoms the recipient to receiving feedback and allows real time reflection and timely changes to practice to make it a developmental process. Feedback becomes less daunting than if it is delivered in a less frequent staged way. Face to face feedback is also more beneficial as it allows discussion and explanation which ensures optimal communication and understanding. This does not always happen with written feedback. It also encourages the individual to describe the rationale for their decisions which is a useful skill and overcomes defensive response to challenge.
