Multiple sclerosis in adults: management | Guidance and guidelines | NICE

The recommendations in this guideline represent the view of NICE, arrived at after careful consideration of the evidence available. When exercising their judgement, professionals are expected to take this guideline fully into account, alongside the individual needs, preferences and values of their patients or service users. The application of the recommendations in this guideline are not mandatory and the guideline does not override the responsibility of healthcare professionals to make decisions appropriate to the circumstances of the individual patient, in consultation with the patient and/or their carer or guardian.

Shifting the Treatment Paradigm for Multiple Sclerosis: Advances in Pathophysiology and Emergence of Novel Disease-Modifying Therapies CME

Our knowledge about the pathophysiology and treatment of multiple sclerosis (MS) has evolved rapidly over the past several years. Greater understanding of the roles of both T and B cells in immune function and MS pathology has allowed a shift in the treatment paradigm and new opportunities for targeted management. Some newer and investigative disease-modifying therapies (DMTs) for MS act to deplete T- and/or B-cell populations to modulate or “reset” immune function. Healthcare professionals who treat patients with MS need a clearer understanding about how these mechanisms fit into current management protocols. Patients with MS face increasingly complex decisions and need information about newer therapeutic options and how these approaches may be applicable to their individual disease presentation. In this activity, expert faculty will discuss recent paradigm shifts in MS, including the role of T and B cells in MS pathophysiology, mechanisms of action of newer and novel DMTs, applicability of these mechanisms to progressive forms of MS, and strategies for educating patients about therapeutic options.
