Why is MgSO4 used in acute asthma management?

The anesthetists loves magnesium. But when I asked of the mechanism from A&E consultants, I got replies that it is wonder drug, or not well understood. Anyone got a more comprehensive answer than that?

The mechanism of action on how MgSO4 works is multifactorial:

1-it has an inhibitory action on smooth muscle contraction (by modulating calcium ion transport at cellular level)
2-it also inhibit release of histamine from mast cells (histami
