What are the most common preventable factors for Diabetes Mellitus?

In the past two and half decades more people are suffering from Type II Diabetes Mellitus. Diabetes Mellitus occurence has tripled in the past decade.
A BBC report probably in 1998 showed that it is due to cocacolization of the society.
What are other views on this? Have you guys come across any studies?

I imagine there are multiple factors at work. Some possible explanations could be linked to the fact that the majority of people with T2DM are undiagnosed as the condition is most often asymptomatic until complications arise.
