Why does a blood transfusion worsen the outcome for transplant patients?

Hi everyone.

I heard that you should avoid giving blood transfusions where possible in patients who may in the future require, for example a kidney transplant. Why is this?

35 years back pre-transplant blood transfusions were considered beneficial. The practice was abandoned as evidence to the contrary was obtained pointing to sensitization and development of a rapid immune response to transplanted organ leading to acute
