Enterochromaffin cell pathway

This is a diagram outlining the functions of Enterochromaffin cells in the gastrointestinal system. They secrete serotonin (5-HT). Which acts peripherally to speed up GI motility and remove irritants from the lumen. This also explains many of the GI signs seen in serotonin syndrome, where patients with elevated levels of serotonin will have increased sweating, hypertension, tachycardia, tremors and diarrhoea.
